National League of Cities Announces 2019 Leadership and Board of Directors. City Council Member Laurie-Anne Sayles was appointed Chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) Community & Economic Development (CED) Federal Advocacy Committee at the organization’s 2018 City Summit in Los Angeles. The CED Committee is one of the seven NLC Federal Advocacy Committees that play a key role in all NLC advocacy efforts on the Hill and within the Administration.

Flags for Our Heroes Opening Ceremony

Hundreds of American flags, sponsored by residents and businesses to recognize community heroes, were on display May 26 through 28. Proud to support this event that honors members of the military, police, firefighters, teachers, coaches, mentors and community leaders at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm. The opening ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on May 27. This activity is coordinated by the Rotary Clubs of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg. Proceeds benefit local charities.

After nine long years, municipal Highway User Revenue (HUR) funding was restored thanks to unanimous votes in the State Senate and House of Delegates. Municipal HURs were first reduced by 96% in 2009 when the monies were used to backfill the State’s budget shortfall during the economic downturn. Since that time, municipalities have lost over $245 million with no plans for repayment. We needed to restore municipal highway user revenues (HURs), not only to meet current road maintenance needs, but more importantly, to provide a long-term, stable funding source for municipal transportation projects. ESE was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust to complete a storm water management, native plant landscaping and public education project on the historic African American site, Pleasant View, 11810 Darnestown Road, Gathersburg, MD.

Ridgeview Middle School held a Black History Month celebration on Feb. 22. The event theme was “Inspirations and Aspirations of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” The Politics Panel included Laurie-Anne Sayles, a member of the Gaithersburg City Council. Sayles spoke of her upbringing as a first-generation Jamaican-American and how black politicians who came before her paved the way for her to run a political campaign and modeled how to advocate for people.

More than 600 Gaithersburg residents signed up for nearly 2,000 volunteer work hours with seventeen different community projects at the Seneca Creek Community Church in Gaithersburg for the annual Martin Luther King day of service. "I think with the leader of our country spouting divisive language it's really important for us to come together on this day and it's really important for us to reinforce the message that martin Luther king held so dear,” said Gaithersburg City Council member Laurie-Anne Sayles.
